It's like Murphy's Law took a plane trip. Saw it on Kanopy a couple of years ago. Love the supernatural angle and impending sense of doom. And of course the cast, direction and cinematography are all superb!Brian Schuckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08463833554200343247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846293972880517466.post-40438032665928467552022-05-23T21:39:25.136-07:002022-05-23T21:39:25.136-07:00ISLAND IN THE SKY is a great movie. The 50s was the golden age of air disaster movies.dfordoomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02306293859869179118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846293972880517466.post-63703383414946401002022-05-23T21:32:30.081-07:002022-05-23T21:32:30.081-07:00Thanks Barry! I believe Fate is a 20th Century Fox property now owned by Disney, so while I'm not wildly optimistic about a Blu-ray release, you never know, Fate could intervene and get it out there where it belongs. As for your trip, there are two things going for you: 1.) the itinerary in the movie was LA to Seattle, and 2.) the jet depicted in the movie never existed in real life. So you should be good! :)Brian Schuckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08463833554200343247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846293972880517466.post-72023661542359093282022-05-23T21:24:37.280-07:002022-05-23T21:24:37.280-07:00Hi Emily! A lengthy anecdote in Gann's memoir tells the real story, in which a number of circumstances miraculously came together to prevent an airliner he was flying from crashing. I suppose the point being that Fate can giveth and taketh away. Hope you enjoy Fate is the Hunter -- I've still got Island in the Sky in my queue.Brian Schuckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08463833554200343247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846293972880517466.post-70521348954044964192022-05-23T20:35:00.567-07:002022-05-23T20:35:00.567-07:00Excellent review, Brian! Hopefully, there will be a Blu-ray in this movie's future, but it's nice to know it's available somewhere. Oh, and I'll try not to take the movie's premise to heart, since I'm flying from Seattle to L.A. in October. ;) Barry P.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11251536316431708240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846293972880517466.post-39026012916615569672022-05-23T19:39:40.153-07:002022-05-23T19:39:40.153-07:00This sounds like an interesting movie! There are little bits of anecdotes and character descriptions that made it into the movie from the book, giving it that much more color and authenticity. It's not entirely clear to me why Gann was so sorely disappointed with the movie.Brian Schuckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08463833554200343247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846293972880517466.post-61523971457909003262022-05-23T14:33:47.831-07:002022-05-23T14:33:47.831-07:00This sounds like a terrific movie – and book, too....This sounds like a terrific movie – and book, too. I saw all kinds of movies - some that I was clearly too young for, like Dr. Strangelove - but Fate is the Hunter was one of them.
